Digital Dash OBD2 Interface: Connect Your Car to Dakota Digital Systems

Integrating a digital dash into your vehicle has never been easier thanks to OBD2 technology. The BIM-01-2 OBD-II (J1850/CAN) Interface is your direct link to extracting vital engine and transmission data from your car’s computer (ECM), allowing seamless integration with Dakota Digital Instrument Systems. This interface simply plugs into your vehicle’s diagnostic port, unlocking a wealth of information for your custom digital dashboard display.

Unlock Vehicle Data for Your Digital Gauges

The BIM-01-2 is engineered to gather and transmit crucial performance metrics, making them visible on your Dakota Digital gauges. Depending on your vehicle, you can access a range of data points, enhancing your driving experience and providing real-time insights into your vehicle’s operation.

Standard Data Points Available on Most Vehicles:

  • Speedometer: Accurately track your vehicle’s speed, essential for safe and legal driving.
  • Tachometer: Monitor your engine’s RPM, crucial for performance driving and engine health.
  • Engine Temperature: Keep an eye on your engine’s coolant temperature to prevent overheating and ensure optimal performance.
  • Check Engine Indicator: Integrate your check engine light directly into your digital dash, providing immediate alerts for potential issues.

Vehicle-Specific Data Points (Availability Varies):

Beyond the standard readings, the BIM-01-2 can potentially access a host of vehicle-specific data, depending on your car’s ECM and sensors. This expanded data set can include:

  • Intake Air Temperature: Monitor the temperature of the air entering your engine, impacting performance and efficiency.
  • Transmission Temperature: For vehicles with automatic transmissions, tracking transmission temperature is vital for preventing damage and ensuring longevity.
  • Ambient Air Temperature: Display the outside air temperature, a useful feature for any driver.
  • Gear Position: Know your current gear in automatic transmissions, useful for performance monitoring.
  • Oil Pressure: Keep track of your engine’s oil pressure, a critical indicator of engine health.
  • Boost Pressure: For turbocharged or supercharged vehicles, monitor boost pressure to ensure optimal performance and identify potential issues.

It’s important to note that the availability of these vehicle-specific parameters (Intake Temp, Transmission Temp, Ambient Air Temp, Oil Pressure, and Gear Position) is dependent on your vehicle’s ECM and factory sensors. Dakota Digital cannot guarantee the presence or accuracy of these readings as they are dictated by the vehicle manufacturer’s systems.

Dakota Digital System Compatibility

The BIM-01-2 is specifically designed to seamlessly integrate with Dakota Digital Instrument Systems. It decodes the data provided by your vehicle’s ECM via OBD-II and supplies this information to the following Dakota Digital systems equipped with a black plastic control module:

  • GRFX Series
  • RTX Series
  • HDX Series
  • VHX Series
  • VFD3 Series

For older BIM-compatible control boxes that feature a 3.5mm headphone jack BIM input, a part number 394194 adapter harness is required. Please note that earlier instrument systems with an aluminum control module are not compatible with BIM connectivity.

OBD-II Protocol Compatibility

The BIM-01-2 is compatible with a range of OBD-II protocols, ensuring broad vehicle support. It is designed for J1850 and CAN OBD-II protocols only, and specifically supports:

  • SAE J1850 VPW
  • SAE J1850 PWM
  • ISO 15765 CAN 500k 11 bit identifiers (following the SAE J1979 PID protocol)

Vehicle Compatibility Concerns?

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the compatibility of the BIM-01-2 with your specific vehicle, we encourage you to reach out to our sales or tech department. They can provide expert guidance and ensure a smooth integration process for your digital dash project.

Important Note for GM Connect & Cruise Packages:

Vehicles equipped with GM Connect & Cruise packages may not transmit gear position data. This limitation will prevent the BIM-01-2 from acquiring gear position information in these specific applications.

Upgrade your vehicle with a digital dash and unlock a new level of vehicle data and monitoring with the BIM-01-2 OBD-II Interface and Dakota Digital Instrument Systems.
