The debate continues among enthusiasts regarding Germany’s top-tier light tank situation. With the absence of a Lynx prototype for Germany, many, including German players, believe a superior light tank vehicle is essential for the nation’s arsenal. Currently, the existing PUMA upgrade, the 2PSO, is seen as insufficient, and there’s no indication of missile integration on the PUMA in development.
This situation naturally brings attention to vehicles like the Boxer Skyranger 30 and potentially the Skyranger 35, although official updates on the 35 have been scarce since its initial announcement. It’s worth noting that the Skyranger systems already possess the capability to mount ground-to-air missiles, offering advancements over systems like the Gepard.
Given the apparent impasse with the Lynx KF-41 and the perceived lack of progress in upgrading the PUMA, the Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle (CRV) emerges as a compelling candidate. The Radkampfwagen 90 hinted at this direction, but the German light tank development seems to have stagnated, particularly concerning issues with existing vehicles that some developers are perceived to be overlooking.
Boxer Crv: A Ready Solution
The Boxer CRV Block I and II variants are reportedly already in training and service, with plans for official deployment anticipated in 2024-2025. These versions are expected to be equipped with advanced systems including the Lance MTS, MK30-2/ABM, Spike LR2, and Iron Fist APS. With approximately 20-25 units already operational in Germany and Australia, the Boxer CRV appears to be a practical and near-term solution. This availability is a key factor in why some believe the Boxer CRV, rather than the Lynx KF41, is positioned to address Germany’s light tank requirements, potentially even superseding the PUMA in certain roles. Looking ahead, there’s potential for a further upgraded Block III variant within the next year, offering even more advanced capabilities.
