AlfaOBD2: Unleash the Power of Diagnostics for Your Stellantis Vehicle

AlfaOBD is a specialized diagnostic software designed for vehicles from the Stellantis group, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). This includes a wide range of models from 1994 to 2023 for Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia, and 2005 to 2023 for Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, and Jeep. For specific model compatibility, you can consult the Supported Vehicles list.

While created to be user-friendly for car owners, AlfaOBD packs features often found in professional diagnostic scanners. Unlike generic OBDII/EOBD applications that offer limited access mainly to engine and transmission systems (and sometimes ABS), AlfaOBD provides native support for Electronic Control Units (ECUs) across your vehicle.

AlfaOBD is available for both Windows PC (XP, 8, 8.1, 10, 11) and Android (4.0.3 and up) platforms. Functionally, the Windows and Android versions are identical, allowing you to choose based on your convenience.

Important Note: Be aware that the “Alfa OBD2 app” on the Apple App Store is a different product and is not associated with AlfaOBD. For Mac users, the Windows version of AlfaOBD can be run using Parallels or Bootcamp. Note that only WiFi OBD interfaces are compatible with Parallels on M1 Macs, while USB and WiFi interfaces work with Parallels on Intel Macs. Bluetooth/USB/WiFi interfaces are compatible with Bootcamp Windows installations on Intel Macs.

Key Features of AlfaOBD

AlfaOBD is equipped with a comprehensive suite of features to empower you with in-depth vehicle diagnostics and customization:

  • Live Parameter Monitoring: Track a wide array of dynamic parameters from your engine, transmission, body, dashboard, ABS, climate control, and more. Visualize this data in real-time with customizable graphs, providing valuable insights into your vehicle’s operation.
  • Static Data Reading: Access crucial static information such as ECU identification, system status, and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). AlfaOBD provides detailed fault code descriptions with probable causes and freeze frame data where available, helping you understand the context of any issues.
  • Fault Code Management: Clear existing fault codes (DTCs) and actively monitor your vehicle for the recurrence of new faults. This feature allows you to address issues and ensure your vehicle is running optimally.
  • Active Diagnostics and Configuration: Perform advanced diagnostic and configuration procedures for various systems controlled by ECUs. This includes service light resets, engine oil change procedures, DPF regeneration, ABS bleeding, air suspension maintenance, transmission calibration, and many other service functions.
  • Electronic Key and RF Remote Programming: On select vehicle models, AlfaOBD enables electronic key and RF remote control programming, offering convenience and control over your vehicle’s security features.
  • Vehicle Configuration Adjustment: Modify your car’s configuration, including activating newly installed equipment within the Body Computer configuration using Proxy Alignment. This is especially useful for customizing and upgrading your vehicle with aftermarket components.

Essential Hardware for Using AlfaOBD

To utilize AlfaOBD and connect to your vehicle, you will require specific hardware components:

1. Security Gateway Bypass (for 2018 and newer models)

For vehicles manufactured in 2018 and later (starting with the 2017 Fiat 500L), Stellantis (FCA) implemented a Security Gateway Module (SGW) to prevent unauthorized diagnostics. Currently, AlfaOBD does not have a software workaround for this security measure. Therefore, a hardware SGW bypass module is necessary.

Owners of Alfa Romeo Giulia/Stelvio, Fiat 500X/Argo/Chronos/Toro, Jeep Renegade/Compass MP, Ducato Serie 8, and RAM ProMaster 2022+ should ensure that the chosen bypass module supports the second high-speed CAN bus, which is connected to pins 12 and 13 of the OBD socket.

Recommended SGW Bypass Options:

North America:

Europe:

While other compatible bypass modules may work, it’s recommended to confirm compatibility with the bypass distributor or manufacturer if you are unsure.

For guidance on SGW location and bypass installation, refer to these resources:

It is advisable to disconnect the bypass module before visiting your dealership, as it may interfere with dealer diagnostic tools.

2. OBD Interface

You will need a compatible OBD interface to establish a connection between your vehicle and AlfaOBD. Refer to the Supported Vehicles list for recommended OBD interface and adapter options specific to your vehicle model.

AlfaOBD currently supports these interface types:

Important Notes on OBD Interfaces:

  • KLLine USB interfaces are not supported on Android due to OS limitations.
  • CAN USB interfaces are compatible with Android devices via On-The-Go (OTG). Verify that your Android device supports OTG and acquire a suitable adapter.
  • Some WLAN interfaces, like OBDLink MX+ WiFi, have built-in Android support. For other WLAN interfaces, Android ad-hoc Wi-Fi support is required. Before purchasing a WLAN interface for Android, ensure your device can be configured for ad-hoc Wi-Fi, which often necessitates rooting the device and replacing the Wi-Fi driver.

3. Colored Adapters

Depending on your car model, production year, and chosen OBD interface, you may need additional adapters or adapter sets. Consult the Supported Vehicles list for recommended adapter options for your specific vehicle.

AlfaOBD conveniently displays the required adapter type and suggested OBD interface on its selection screen when you choose a control module. The app will also show a “Connect adapter…” message before attempting to connect.

Note: When using OBDLink MX+/EX, ELS27, Vgate vLinker FD/FD+/MC/MC+/FS interfaces, the “blue” adapter is not needed. Simply close the “Connect blue adapter” message and proceed with the connection.

“Grey” Adapter Required for:

  • Alfa Romeo Giulia/Stelvio
  • Fiat 500E (2020+)/500X/Argo/Chronos/Ducato Serie 8 (2022+)/Toro
  • Jeep Renegade/Compass (MP)
  • RAM Pro Master (2022+)

“Yellow” Adapter Required for:

  • Alfa Romeo Giulietta/Mito/4C
  • Fiat 500/500E (before 2020)/500L/Panda 2012+/Punto EVO/Grande Punto
  • Fiat Professional Ducato (types 250 and 290 before 2022)/Doblo (type 152/263)
  • RAM Pro Master (before 2022)/Pro Master City

These adapters are available from various vendors, including:

For a detailed understanding of AlfaOBD features, installation, and usage for Windows, refer to the help documentation, which is included in the software download package. Help documentation for AlfaOBD for Android is available here (English) and here (German).
