Automatic Labs, a well-known name in the connected car industry for its innovative OBD-II dongle and app, has announced the shutdown of its services. This decision marks the end of an era for one of the pioneering companies that brought vehicle diagnostics and data directly to car owners’ smartphones. The company, owned by SiriusXM, cited the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic as the primary reason for ceasing operations, which will render their hardware obsolete after May 28, 2020.
Automatic Labs was at the forefront of leveraging the OBD-II port, a standard diagnostic port in vehicles since 1996 in the US. While typically used by mechanics for repairs, Automatic Labs developed user-friendly dongles and an accompanying “Automatic Labs Obd2 App” that allowed everyday drivers to access and interpret this valuable vehicle data.
Through the “automatic labs obd2 app”, users gained unprecedented insights into their vehicle’s performance and health. The app could decode “check engine” light warnings, providing clear explanations beyond a simple dashboard indicator. Furthermore, it offered real-time fuel consumption tracking, allowing drivers to optimize their driving habits for better economy. The app also recorded driving metrics such as speed and acceleration, and featured services like a teen driver monitor, alerting parents to speeding or driving outside set geographical boundaries. Early versions relied on a smartphone’s data connection, but later dongle generations incorporated their own cellular connectivity for seamless operation.
SiriusXM acquired Automatic Labs in 2017, reportedly for around $100 million, aiming to expand its reach into the connected car market. Despite the acquisition and continued independent operation initially, the current economic climate has forced a change in direction.
In an official statement, Automatic Labs explained, “Just like many other companies in the United States, the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted our business. With fewer consumers purchasing and leasing vehicles and drivers on the road, we unfortunately do not see a path forward for our business. These are unprecedented times, and with so much uncertainty ahead, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue the Automatic connected car product, service and platform.”
Until May 28, 2020, users could continue to access features like crash emergency alerts, trip history, vehicle diagnostics, and integrations with other apps. After this date, the service will be discontinued, and Automatic Labs recommends recycling the OBD-II dongle. This shutdown signifies a significant shift in the connected car device market and leaves users of the “automatic labs obd2 app” seeking alternative solutions for vehicle monitoring and diagnostics.
