2018 VW Passat R-Line: Long-Term Review of Sporty Sedan

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T R-Line has joined our long-term test fleet, and even in its initial three weeks, it has already clocked 1,200 miles. This model showcases the R-Line trim, which adds a touch of sportiness to the well-regarded Passat sedan. Our test vehicle is equipped with the Passat’s updated standard 2-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, now producing 174 horsepower, a slight increase from the previous 1.8-liter engine. While it’s not a sports car, this engine, paired with a 6-speed Tiptronic transmission, provides ample power for everyday driving needs.

The handling of the 2018 Passat R-Line is noteworthy, described as great, while maintaining a comfortable ride quality. We did note the absence of some premium features found in the Passat SEL Premium we tested previously, such as push-button start. However, this highlights the range within the Passat lineup, offering a model for various preferences and budgets. Early fuel economy figures are promising, with us already observing 37.3 miles per gallon on interstate drives, slightly exceeding the EPA highway rating of 36 mpg.

After three months and 6,200 miles, our 2018 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T R-Line has proven itself to be a capable autobahn cruiser. The 174-horsepower 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in our test car delivers impressive low-end torque and substantial passing power for a four-cylinder. The 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission shifts smoothly and responsively as speed increases. The brakes are effective and secure at high speeds, although they can be a bit sensitive at lower speeds.

The mid-size sedan configuration of the Passat R-Line makes it exceptionally comfortable for long journeys, even with firm seats. The Passat’s generously sized trunk minimized any need for an SUV’s larger cargo area. Fuel efficiency remains a strong point, as we were able to extend driving range significantly on a 1,500-mile trip, skipping two regular fuel stops. Overall, we achieved an average of 30.7 miles per gallon using regular gasoline. The Chattanooga-built Passat’s comfortable ride, agile handling, and responsive powertrain have made a positive impression during our extended test.
