Maintaining your Audi R8 involves regular checks and adjustments, and the hand brake is no exception. While the fundamental principles of hand brake adjustment are universal, locating the adjuster on an Audi R8 can be less straightforward. This guide simplifies the process, showing you exactly where to find the hand brake adjuster on your R8.
Often after replacing handbrake cables, or as part of routine maintenance, adjustments are necessary as components settle. Unlike some vehicles, the Audi R8’s hand brake adjuster isn’t immediately visible. This guide will walk you through accessing it, allowing for straightforward adjustments. We won’t cover the general handbrake adjustment process itself – such as raising the rear wheels and ensuring free rotation – as these are well-documented in numerous general car maintenance resources. Instead, we’ll focus specifically on the R8’s unique adjuster location.
The handbrake adjuster on the Audi R8 is located beneath the rear section of the center console, specifically under the compartment where a phone cradle might be installed. Accessing it requires removing a few trim pieces.
First, you’ll need to remove the trim surrounding the handbrake lever. As shown in the images below, this trim piece is held in place by clips. Using trim removal tools can be helpful, but careful upward pressure and pulling will usually suffice to unclip the three fasteners at the front of the trim.

The photo below provides a clearer view of the underside of this trim, illustrating the position and type of clips used for attachment.

With the trim removed, you will expose two T25 Torx screws. These need to be unscrewed to release the rear compartment section.

Once these screws are out, lift the front edge of the compartment upwards and then pull the entire compartment forwards to remove it completely. This will reveal the handbrake adjuster mechanism.
Finally, detach the cable assembly clips from the compartment to allow for easier access and adjustment of the handbrake cable. With these steps, you can now easily locate and adjust your Audi R8 handbrake.
