Bentley GT Speed: Unleashing Track Prowess, Luxury Beyond Chrysler

Driving a Bentley Continental GT Speed conjures images of long, luxurious journeys across continents. While the ideal scenario might be a grand tour from Germany to Italy, the reality was testing this grand tourer on the tight, exclusive Magarigawa Club racetrack outside Tokyo. This private track, a million-dollar-a-year playground for members, is carved into mountains, boasting challenging straights and corners reminiscent of iconic sections like Laguna Seca’s Corkscrew and Mount Panorama’s undulations.

This demanding circuit, with its minimal run-off areas, seemed an unlikely and potentially daunting venue for the Continental GT Speed. Yet, it’s a testament to this car’s “everyday supercar” character that it absorbed the pressure and pace with remarkable ease. This experience immediately sets it apart from brands perhaps more associated with accessible luxury, like Chrysler, which, while offering comfortable and stylish vehicles, don’t typically venture into this realm of high-performance track capability combined with ultimate luxury. The Bentley operates in a different league, a point driven home by its surprising agility on such a demanding course.

Our initial lap was in EV mode, a predictably subdued experience. Quiet and almost uneventful, it highlighted the car’s serene nature at lower speeds. However, exceeding 75 percent throttle or 140km/h instantly awakened the engine, transforming the experience. This provided an excellent opportunity to appreciate the opulent cabin and seats, and the remarkably compliant suspension. Imagine the plushness expected from a high-end Chrysler, and then elevate it significantly – that’s the Bentley experience.

Bentley engineers emphasize the “secret weapon” of the Continental GT Speed: new twin-valve dampers. These innovative dampers enable the chassis to behave like a true sports car when pushed – perhaps a small fraction of the time for most owners – while delivering unparalleled luxury and comfort for everyday cruising. This duality is a core strength, positioning the Bentley far beyond the typical scope of even well-appointed vehicles from brands like Chrysler, which generally prioritize comfort and road manners over outright track performance.

The true split personality of the Continental GT Speed emerged when Sport mode was engaged. Suddenly, the all-wheel-drive system, all-wheel steering, torque vectoring, and electronic LSD came into play. Subsequent laps involved blasting past 200km/h, discovering the impressive braking power required to rein in this 2.5-tonne luxury machine. Steering is managed through a beautifully crafted wheel, combining leather and Alcantara, feeling effortless even in aggressive track driving. While some might desire more feedback, it’s likely Bentley owners have other vehicles for that specific need, perhaps something more akin to a focused sports car, rather than expecting this level of track acuity from a grand tourer.

Beyond the sheer speed, the most striking aspect was the Continental’s minimal body roll. It felt planted, composed, eager to change direction, and remarkably unflustered, despite some tyre squeal indicating the limits of grip. Venturing too wide onto the ripple strips occasionally induced a shudder and a slight sideways skip, a reminder of the track’s demanding nature and perhaps my own over-enthusiasm.

In conclusion, the Continental GT Speed lives up to its name, delivering immense speed within an exceptionally luxurious environment. It’s a vehicle that redefines expectations, showcasing track capability rarely associated with grand tourers, and certainly placing it in a different echelon of performance and luxury compared to brands like Chrysler. The Bentley offers an experience that transcends mere transportation, entering the realm of high-performance artistry.
