OBD2 apps, on the other hand, are akin to Swiss Army knives or Leatherman tools: portable, versatile for certain tasks, and definitely better than nothing in a pinch. They offer a more affordable and user-friendly entry point to vehicle diagnostics.
This article evaluates a range of OBD2 apps tested on a 2006 Gen2 Toyota Prius, using both a budget-friendly BAFX Products ELM327 (version 1.4 clone) and a high-performance OBDLink MX+ adapter. We explored apps like Dr Prius, Hybrid Assistant, Torque Pro, Car Scanner Pro, ELM Scan Toyota, and OBDLink/OBD Fusion, assessing their capabilities beyond the standard, government-mandated generic OBD2 functions. These generic functions, common to all OBD2 compliant vehicles, include reading current and pending codes, accessing mode 06 test results, viewing freeze frame data, monitoring inspection readiness, and displaying a generic data list.
However, for hybrid vehicles, the real value lies in “enhanced” functionality. Many apps offer paid upgrades that unlock access to manufacturer-specific ECUs (Electronic Control Units), providing deeper insights into Toyota/Prius systems, including hybrid-specific data and codes.
To put these apps to the test, we simulated several faults on the Prius, including disconnecting an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) ignition coil, a rear wheel speed sensor (WSS), the HV (High Voltage) battery safety plug, and the battery fan. Techstream, the benchmark tool, reported a comprehensive list of codes: ECM-P0352, Hybrid Ctrl-P0A0D & P3000, HV batt-P0A84, ABS/VSC/Trac-C0200, C1259, & C1310, and A/C B1421. Let’s see how the OBD2 apps stacked up against this professional diagnosis.
Dr Prius: Focus on HV Battery Health
Dr Prius is laser-focused on the health of your hybrid’s High Voltage battery. Its interface is designed for easy interpretation of crucial battery metrics, displaying block voltages, internal resistance, battery temperatures, State Of Charge (SOC), and current amperage. While the app’s autoscaling for voltage differences can sometimes exaggerate minor variations, it provides a quick overview of battery condition.
The app’s menu allows users to read and clear ECM and Hybrid Control codes, and even HV battery codes. In our test, Dr Prius successfully retrieved ECM code P0352, and hybrid system codes P0A0D and P3000P0A84 (combining two codes into one). While some users have reported successfully retrieving P3000 with Dr Prius but missing battery-specific codes, our test showed some HV battery code reading capability.
Beyond diagnostics, Dr Prius offers several control functions, including disabling reverse and seatbelt beepers, deactivating traction control, initiating ICE maintenance mode, and controlling the battery fan. The paid version unlocks advanced features like HV battery health and life expectancy tests, estimating battery capacity, and data logging capabilities, making it a robust tool for hybrid battery management.
Hybrid Assistant: Comprehensive Hybrid System Monitoring
Hybrid Assistant (Android only, free) provides a wealth of real-time data for monitoring your hybrid system’s performance. Its interface, while densely packed with information, offers deep insights into HV battery, ICE, and hybrid control systems, allowing you to analyze your driving habits and vehicle performance. The display includes numerous icons, many of which lead to sub-screens with even more detailed data, including battery power, SOC, ICE fuel trims, temperatures across various systems, and regenerative/friction braking metrics. It also includes a function to manually activate the battery fan at high speed.
A standout feature of Hybrid Assistant is its battery test, which logs data that is then processed by the integrated Hybrid Reporter to generate detailed trip reports with insightful charts and graphs. The block voltage and voltage differential graph is particularly useful for assessing battery health. However, Hybrid Assistant is purely a data monitoring tool; it does not offer any code reading or clearing functionality. It’s also worth noting that Hybrid Assistant has compatibility issues with OBDLink MX+ adapters with firmware versions above a certain threshold, as mentioned on the app’s website.
Torque Pro: Customizable Data and Generic OBD2 Focus
Torque Pro is a highly customizable app primarily focused on generic OBD2 ECM data, offering extensive data displays, performance testing, and data logging. While it excels at generic OBD2 functions, its hybrid-specific capabilities require more setup. By enabling extra Gen2 Prius PIDs (Parameter IDs), users can access additional data related to hybrid control, HV battery, and cruise control. A paid Toyota plugin is available, but its benefits for Prius models are unclear. (The distinction between free and paid versions of Torque Pro regarding Prius functionality is not well-documented.)
In terms of diagnostics, Torque Pro’s code reading is limited. In our test, it only detected the ECM code P0352, missing codes from other ECUs. It lacks bidirectional controls and enhanced code functionality out-of-the-box, requiring significant user customization to leverage its hybrid-specific data potential. Setting up Torque Pro for comprehensive hybrid monitoring can be time-consuming, and its basic configuration offers limited diagnostic depth for hybrid systems.
ELMScan Toyota: Enhanced Toyota Diagnostics with Limited Hybrid Depth
ELMScan Toyota, originally acquired for Corolla models, is a paid app that provides generic OBD2 and enhanced Toyota ECM data. It reads both current and historical codes and can access systems beyond the ECM, including Electric Power Steering (EPS), ABS, and potentially SRS (Supplemental Restraint System). In our Prius test, ELMScan Toyota identified codes P0352, C0200, C1259, and C1310, although code descriptions were not available for all.
Uniquely, ELMScan Toyota offers bidirectional ECM control, allowing users to actively adjust fuel trim (positive or negative) to test air-fuel and oxygen sensor performance. While the app mentions Gen1 Hybrid and HV battery ECUs, it appears to lack specific Gen2 Prius hybrid system support. It includes data logging and graphing features, but its hybrid-specific diagnostic depth for Gen2 Prius is limited compared to more specialized apps.
Car Scanner Pro: Broad ECU Scanning with Moderate Hybrid Support
Car Scanner Pro is another OBD2 app with enhanced Toyota capabilities. It boasts the ability to scan up to 131 ECUs. However, on our Gen2 Prius, it recognized generic OBD2, ECM, Hybrid Control, and HV battery ECUs. The app helpfully indicates which ECUs it can communicate with. It offers some “Toyota” ECM data (not specifically Prius-focused) and hybrid/battery/cruise control data. Car Scanner Pro successfully retrieved codes P0352, P3000, and P0A0D, but missed P0A84. Interestingly, clearing hybrid system codes also cleared the battery code, suggesting some level of integration. Data logging and graphing are available, with the paid version unlocking mode 06 data and potentially more enhanced features. Car Scanner Pro provides a broader ECU scan than some competitors but its Prius-specific depth is moderate.
OBDLink and OBDFusion: Extensive System Access with Adapter Dependency
OBDLink and OBDFusion are closely related apps offering generic OBD2 functionality with paid enhanced access. Enhanced access is purchased per vehicle make and model year, meaning coverage for multiple vehicles can become costly. OBDLink is exclusively compatible with OBDLink adapters, while OBDFusion works with generic adapters but with limited functionality for cheaper ELM327 clones. We tested OBDFusion (with purchased 2006 Toyota access) using a BAFX adapter on our Gen2 Prius. It connected to ECM, cruise control, hybrid control, HV battery, ABS, EPS, and SRS, displaying data from all these systems, including some Prius-specific ECM data like CHST temperature and 3-way valve status. It accurately displayed current, pending, and historical codes – P0352, P0A0D, P3000, P0A84, C0200, C1259, and C1310 – along with correct code definitions, but only ECM freeze frame data. Bidirectional controls were absent.
However, the BAFX adapter encountered communication errors when attempting to connect to secondary ECUs on the BEAN bus (A/C, TPMS, power control, etc.), indicating the need for a higher-quality adapter with genuine ELM327 ver. 2.0 or better for full system access.
Switching to the OBDLink MX+ adapter with the OBDLink app significantly expanded access. While pricier, the MX+ currently provides free access to all enhanced add-ons across all makes and years, a valuable feature for users working with multiple vehicles. With the MX+, we gained (partial) access to Gen2 secondary ECUs, retrieving codes from TPMS, body, gateway, A/C (including B1421), smart key, TCM (transmission control module), immobilizer, and power source control systems. Data access from these secondary ECUs was inconsistent; some data was available from TCM and body modules, A/C data appeared static, TPMS data was unusable, and other ECUs returned zero values. Despite some limitations in data, OBDLink with MX+ adapter offered the most comprehensive system coverage among the tested apps.
Conclusion: Choosing the Best OBD2 App for Your Hybrid
Each OBD2 app reviewed offers a unique balance of capabilities and limitations for hybrid vehicle diagnostics. None of these apps replicate the full functionality of professional tools like Techstream, particularly lacking in bidirectional controls and advanced features like INF/sub-codes and specialized tests. Freeze frame data availability is also inconsistent and limited to the ECM in most cases.
However, each app can be valuable depending on your specific needs and budget.
