Troubleshooting Intermittent Coolant Temp Gauge in Chevy Trailblazer I-6

Experiencing an erratic coolant temperature gauge in your 2008 Chevy Trailblazer with the I-6 engine can be concerning. Many owners have encountered this issue, where the temperature gauge in the instrument cluster works intermittently, leading to potential confusion and worry about engine health. A common symptom associated with this gauge malfunction is the simultaneous failure of the vehicle’s A/C system. Interestingly, despite these issues, the engine often continues to run smoothly otherwise. If you’re facing this problem, it’s reasonable to suspect the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECTS) as a potential culprit.

The location of the coolant temp sensor on the later model Trailblazer I-6 engines (2006 onwards) presents a significant challenge for DIY mechanics. Unlike earlier models where the ECTS was conveniently positioned on the left side of the engine near the thermostat housing, the newer models have it relocated to the right rear side of the cylinder head. This placement makes accessing the sensor considerably more difficult.

While the ECTS electrical plug is visible on top of the valve cover, the sensor itself is hidden beneath a heater hose and the exhaust manifold heat shield. Repair manuals may not adequately address the replacement procedure for this relocated sensor, adding to the frustration. Based on community knowledge, replacing this sensor often necessitates a 15mm slotted deep well socket and accessing it from under the vehicle, through the front right wheel well, reaching over the frame rail.

The seemingly inconvenient placement of the ECTS and its wiring connectors at the rear top of the valve cover raises questions about design choices. A more accessible location, perhaps similar to the V-8 Trailblazers on the left side of the engine, could have simplified maintenance. Understanding the intricacies of your vehicle’s coolant temperature system and the location of its components is the first step in diagnosing and resolving issues like an intermittent coolant temp gauge. If you’re tackling this repair yourself, be prepared for a potentially challenging access point for the coolant temperature sensor.
