Step-by-Step Guide to Install ELM327 USB Drivers on Windows

The ELM327 chip is the backbone of many OBD2 USB interfaces, including the V1.5 version. Installing the correct drivers is crucial for your Windows computer to recognize and communicate with the interface. Here’s how to ensure a smooth driver installation process:

Checking Driver Installation in Device Manager

After connecting your ELM327 USB interface to your Windows laptop, the first step is to check if the drivers were automatically installed correctly.

  1. Search for “Device Manager” in the Windows search bar.
  2. Open Device Manager and expand “Ports (COM & LPT)“.
  3. Look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark (!). These marks indicate driver installation issues. Common device names to watch out for include:
    • USB-Serial CH340
    • FT232R USB UART Prolific
    • USB-to-Serial
    • USB Serial Port
    • USB2.0-Serial
